New in Laval: your first car in Quebec
You have just settled in Laval and a car quickly becomes a must: work, groceries, the kids’ school, and of course winter. At O.B.K. Automobiles, we explain in plain terms how a financing application works when you are new to the country, in French or English.
Why credit works differently when you arrive
Canadian lenders rely first on your credit history in Canada. When you have just arrived, that history is often short or non-existent, even if your file was excellent in your home country. The lender then looks at other things, such as your job, your income and your situation in the country, and makes its decision.
We offer 1st, 2nd and 3rd chance credit financing. Financing subject to lender approval.
How to apply
- Start the online application: tell us the type of vehicle you want and the monthly budget you have in mind.
- Add your date of birth (19 or older), your employment status, your employer and your monthly income.
- Enter your address in Quebec and say whether you rent or own.
- A team member contacts you to go over your file, and you will be told which documents to bring for your situation.
- You come to Laval to test-drive the vehicle you chose, then sign once everything is clear.
Documents: we guide you
Every path is different: a temporary worker, an international student and a permanent resident are not in the same situation. Rather than a general list that may not apply to you, you will be told which documents to bring once your application is in. Just keep your ID, your immigration papers and your proof of income handy: it makes the conversation easier.
Before buying your first car in Quebec
- Driver’s licence: depending on your home country, a foreign licence may be valid for a limited time or may have to be exchanged. Check the SAAQ rules before you drive.
- Insurance: civil liability insurance is mandatory to drive in Quebec. Get quotes before you sign, as the cost depends on the vehicle and your driving experience.
- Winter tires: they are mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15.
- Registration: it is done with the SAAQ when you buy; a team member walks you through the steps.
